Scripture:
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
– Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
Compassion fatigue is a modern diagnosis. However, Paul warned of its manifestations two thousand years ago. Followers of Jesus are called to love out of obedience, not compassion. The motive makes all the difference if we are to have endurance in “doing good.” Compassion is a virtuous emotion, but it wanes. Obedience is a choice that does not depend on how we feel. Jesus healed the sick, fed the hungry, and loved people. It wasn’t because He pitied them. It wasn’t for any personal gratification. It was simply obedience to God’s will for those before him. Compassion needs to be fed. Obedience that springs from a grateful heart never becomes weary. Therefore, may we take every opportunity to do good as an expression of our relationship with God who loves us.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for your Son who didn’t become weary of doing good. Help us live with the same attitude as Jesus, no longer pleasing our flesh but pleasing Your Spirit.
