Scripture:
“But whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother or sister in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him?”
– 1 John 3:17 (NASB)
One of the hallmarks of a Christian life is expressing compassion and mercy by sharing earthly resources with those in need. Luke paints a vivid picture of a deep spirit of compassion in the life of the early church, penning that “all the believers were together and had all things in common; and they would sell their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need.” (Acts 2:44-45). This distinguishing trait was one of the reasons that led the disciples in the early church to be referred to as “Christians,” meaning “the ones who behaved like Christ.” Little wonder Jesus told his disciples “By this, all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35). Do you know someone in need today? Let Christ’s love and compassion be expressed through you.
Prayer:
Lord, I realize that there are so many in need around me. Open my eyes, to those You have destined to experience Your love and compassion through me. I ask for a kind and tender heart to gladly share out of the bountiful physical blessings You have given me, to the praise and glory of Your name.
