Where can I learn more about First Methodist’s beliefs? Three or four times a year, we offer Being Christian & United Methodist classes led by Dr. Steve Wende which is especially for new members and prospective members. Here you’ll meet staff members, develop new friendships, and learn about FMH’s missions and vision. For reservations contact Susie Horr at email@example.com or call 832-668-1821.
Do I have to attend a class to join First Methodist? We invited all members to attend the Being Christian & United Methodist class. While it is helpful to take this class before joining, you can wait until after you’ve joined to attend. The only prerequisite for joining our church is your belief in Jesus Christ and your willingness to support the church with your membership vows. We also expect each new member to attend a New Member Orientation. Lunch will be served and Rev. Spears will lead a tour of our historical church building.
What is expected when I join? We ask all new members to attend the New Member Orientation (held every other month) which includes lunch, a tour of the church and a discussion of your membership vows. In addition, new members will be expected to participate in a small group (ex. Sunday morning Bible Studies), participate in a citywide missions opportunity one time a year and consider going on a mission trip either in the U.S. or out of the country. New members will have the opportunity to take a class taught by Dr. Wende called Being Christian and United Methodist which will be offered several times a year. Finally, every new member is encouraged to learn about their Spiritual Gifts. Classes will be offered several times a year. Check your bulletin or church website (fmhouston.com) to learn more about these classes.
What are the membership vows? 1. Do you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and pledge your allegiance to his kingdom? 2. Do you profess the Christian faith as contained in the Old and New Testaments as your rule of faith and practice? 3. Will you, according to the grace given you, live a Christian life? If you make these vows your solemn promise, then you are eligible to take this final vow of membership to First Methodist Houston. 4. Will you be loyal to First Methodist Houston and uphold it with your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness?
